Being a very small stud, I have the opportunity to get to know each and every one of my Jerseys personally. With the philosophy that as God cares for every creature (Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. ~ Matt. 10:29), and finds each one significant, all the cows are named instead of numbered.
Currently, all of the Jerseys are the descendants of two cows named Blinkers and Fiona. In the very early days of my parents’ Hydeaway Jerseys, it was decided that to give me my own sense of responsibility, I would be given a cow and a heifer. Being five years old at the time not an awful lot of responsibility was involved at first, but it is their descendants that make up the Joyful Jersey stud.
Blinkers was honourably retired two years ago at the age of 15, having completed roughly 12 lactations. Fiona, being much younger, is still going strong and about to enter her seventh lactation.
